Assassin’s creed: Convergence is a comic book series published by Titan Comics and written by Al Ewing. The first issue was released in October 2022.

The comic follows Abstergo employee and scientist Matthias Schrauwen, as he explores the memories of his ancestor Adriaen de Bruijn.

The Story[]

Issue #1[]

The first issue opens in the American cemetery in Normandy, France. The cemetery is empty apart from a man in a lab coat, who is sitting on a bench overlooking the beaches. He is joined by an older man in a light grey business suit, and the two sit in silence for a moment. The man in the business suit lights up a cigarette, and asks Matthias Schrauwen what kind of game he thinks he’s playing. Matthias notes how Americans seemingly never get his last name right, evading the question.

Coldly, the man in the business suit states that Matthias has played all his cards and that he came here simply out of courtesy and, admittedly curiosity. He goes on to tell Matthias that sigma squad is already on its way, upon which Matthias asks if this is the same sigma team that was with Horatio Pierce. The man answers that Abstergo’s resources are vast, and that Sigma team’s losses have already been replenished. Matthias laughs this off and asks him for a cigarette.

The scene changes to the parking lot where Emilia Nováková, a member of the reformed Sigma Team, is awaiting the signal. She overhears a conversation between two of her team members about Schrauwen’s death, and how it will be a great blow to the assassins on the European continent. Emilia cuts them off by saying that Schrauwen is not dead yet, and that they need to focus. Before they can respond, the team receives the orders to engage from Juhani Otso Berg.

Back in the cemetery, Matthias reveals that his work is already complete and that even if he dies, it won’t harm the Assassins that much. He goes on to explain how his death will only work against the Templars, as it will incur the wrath of his brotherhood. He then addresses the man in the business suit as Victor and proceeds to call him foolish and overconfident by coming here himself. Victor calmly retorts that this whole ordeal is a mess he made and that he should therefore be the one to clean it up. He draws a handgun, and thanks Matthias in advance for his genetic memory. With a mirthless smile, Matthias warns Victor that things are not what they seem. The issue ends with the reveal of Mathias’ hidden blade and an aerial shot of the cemetery and memorial, where Sigma team can be seen closing in.

Issue #2[]

The second issue opens in the year 2010, twelve years before the events in Normandy, France. Standing in an observation room, Alexandre Bacque, Warren Vidic, Victor Abbott, Álvaro Gramática, David Kilkerman, Henry Liman, and Matthias Schrauwen watch as an individual strapped into an animus flatlines. Matthias marks the time of death as 14:37 on April 25th, after eight hours and nineteen minutes of continuous exposure to the animus. David Kilkerman remarks that the prolonged exposure experiment can be counted as a success and congratulates Victor Abbott on the recent advancements of the surrogate initiative. Warren Vidic stubbornly refuses to acknowledge Abbot’s success, but is ignored by Álvaro Gramática, who asks Matthias about the cause of death. Matthias reports that the overheating animus in combination with the bleeding effect proved to be fatal. Liman then asks if the bleeding effect could be properly weaponized, which both Abbott and Vidic confirm. Bacque suggests using agents from Operations in the experiment, and both Kilkerman and Liman express their interest. Abbott proposes to have his research team look into it, but Vidic reminds them that the Inner Sanctum must approve first.

Two weeks after the demonstration, Matthias is summoned to Abbot’s office. Matthias asks why he was summoned, upon which Abbott tells him that the Inner Sanctum has officially approved Project 117, dubbed Project Ichor. When Matthias asks what this has to do with the Surrogate Initiative, Abbott explains that their experts have been deemed essential to Project Ichor’s success. Matthew disagrees, arguing that any scientist in the Animus project and its offshoot programs could perform the research. Abbott nods along and remarks that that’ll be for Matthias to decide. Before Matthias can question him, Abbott reveals that Matthias has been put in charge of Project Ichor and congratulates him.

Later that day, Matthias is in his new office, going over several files when he’s interrupted by a knock on the door. A woman enters, who immediately scolds him for not checking who he lets in. She introduces herself as Emilia Nováková, agent of the Operations division. She takes a seat at his desk and puts her feet up, earning her an angry stare from Matthias. He demands to know what the meaning of this is, and Emilia nonchalantly responds that she’s been assigned as his bodyguard. Matthias initially dismisses her, saying that he has no need for a bodyguard. Emilia then reminds him that he is no fighter, and as head of a major project has become a viable target for the Assassins. Matthias does not answer, which makes Emilia smile triumphantly.

The following day, Emilia is staring at her empty coffee cup. She then starts complaining to Matthias that they’ve not left the office at all and that this isn’t what she was signed up for. Matthias initially ignores her, but eventually budges. He reassures her that they’ll be leaving the office soon, as he has an important meeting in the afternoon. Emilia digs deeper, causing Matthias to reveal that he’ll be meeting with Isabelle Ardant, head of the Historical Research Division.

The story transitions to Abstergo Industries in Montreal, with Emilia standing guard outside Isabelle Ardent’s office. Inside, Matthias can be seen standing with his hands in lab coat pockets while Isabelle considers his request. She calls him reckless for suggesting a field mission, but Matthias reiterates that he needs DNA-samples of a Hidden One to succeed. Isabelle again expresses her doubts, upon which Matthias bluntly asks if she has a lead for him or not. Isabelle tells him not to forget his place, and a moment of silence follows. She then hesitantly admits having a lead for him, explaining that her division uncovered a tomb in Samarkand, Uzbekistan with the remains of a potential Hidden One. Matthias remarks that that’s good enough for him and prepares to leave. Isabelle gives him a final warning, mentioning that her people have abandoned the site due to the presence of the Assassins.

Outside, Emilia falls in beside Matthias and asks how the meeting went. Matthias explains that they’ll be leaving for Abstergo’s facility in Tashkent as soon as possible and instructs her to gather a team of agents she trusts. Emilia remarks that trust is a big word, but that she’ll try to get a couple of reliable agents together.
