Jin Chen (陳進, born 1999) is a young Chinese-American man of Anglo-Japanese descent. He is descended from the Irish Assassin Arthur Kavanagh, his Templar son Lonan Kavanagh, and his Assassin grandson Takao Hayato through the maternal line.

In 2022, Jin learned of his ancestral connection to the Assassin Brotherhood as the last living descendant of the Kavanagh bloodline, when his life came under threat by an unknown shadow organisation in direct conflict with both the Assassins and Abstergo Industries. He became sought after by both the Assassins and Templars when it was discovered that his ancestors were linked to the shadow organisation in question.

Through Arthur's memories, Jin and the Assassins learned of the existence of the Armor of Ares - a Piece of Eden capable of memory manipulation on a global scale.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Young Jin

Jin in his youth

Jin was born in Philadelphia in 1999 to Chen Junfeng and Xiu. While pregnant, Junfeng ran with the Triads and thus made life dangerous for Xiu and an unborn Jin. As a result of feeling unsafe, Xiu fled from Shanghai to the United States, settling in Philidelphia and giving birth to Jin there.

In 2007, Jin returned home from school to find his mother dead in their home. It was ruled as a suicide by law enforcement but the answer never satisfied Jin when he reached adulthood, knowing that she never showed signs of depression or suicidal idealisations.

Jin spent the next few years in foster homes. Deeply wounded by his mother's sudden death and with no other family, Jin turned to crime at the age of twelve, selling drugs and committing theft, unintentionally following in his father's footsteps. As he grew older, his crimes escalated and he spent the majority of his time in and out of juvie.

Raid gone wrong[]

"Either you kill her, or I kill you."

Teenage Jin

Jin, in a state of shock, after being forced to murder the girl

In 2018, at the age of 19, a gang that Jin was affiliated with took part in an raid to reclaim drugs that had been stolen. Wanting to prove himself, Jin volunteered to take part in the raid much to the approval of the gang leader. A few days later, the gang launched the raid and Jin aided them in this raid. The gang broke into a house, which Jin was led to believe were where the drugs were located.

However, instead of this the rival drug lord's family was situated there. Jin had been tricked into aiding in a slaughter, Jin was so shocked by the human obscenity that he was witnessing he refused to fire a single shot. However, a fellow gang member noticed this and ratted him out to the leader of the attack. Wanting Jin to prove himself, the leader demanded he shoot and kill the last remaining family member - a little girl.

Initially he refused but was beaten badly and threatened to be killed himself if he didn't comply. Eventually, he gave in and after minutes of wrestling with himself, Jin pulled the trigger and ended her life. Having witnessed the worst man could do to one another and being forced to take part would go on to traumatise him, and birth a harbouring belief that humans were fundamentally broken.

Found by the Assassins[]

Gina: "I promise you, we're the good guys."
Jin: "You just fucking kidnapped me! Excuse me if I find that hard to believe."
―Jin Chen and Gina Garcia

In June 2022, Jin was caught in possession of drugs while driving under the influence, for this he was immediately taken to a holding cell where he would spend the next day there.

During the night, Jin was woken up to the sounds of screaming and loud gunfire. Panicked at the situation, he demands to be let out by a guard but is denied and told to stay back. Eventually, the source of the gunfire make their way to where Jin is being held and kill the guard watching over him. Jin is finally able to get a good look at the group that massacred the prison, led by a blonde woman and a brute of a man.

The blonde woman proceeds to pull out a pistol and points it directly at Jin who pleads for her not to do so. Thankfully, they are stopped with the intervention of an Abstergo team. In the chaos, two members of the Abstergo team extract Jin from his cell while the others repel the assailants. Jin is led outside and about to be taken away in a transport but the two agents are killed by two hooded figures, a male and female, who quickly grab Jin and throw him in a van.

Confused at what just occured, Jin tries to fight off the hooded figures but is easily subdued by the man. He continues to struggle but the hooded woman only agrees to release him once he's calmed down, assuring him they aren't there to hurt him. Jin calms down and is eventually released by the man. The man and woman take their hoods down and introduce themselves as Gina Garcia and Roberto Garcia, revealing themselves to be members of the Assassin Brotherhood and the nature of their work. Still confused, Jin demands to know who those other people that tried to kill him were and why Abstergo was involved.

Roberto explains that a few days prior he became a target when Abstergo had traced an Assassin named Arthur Kavanagh's bloodline to Jin. Gina then adds that this is due to his Assassin ancestry and that Abstergo is a front for the Templar Order, their sworn enemies, Jin expresses his lingering confusion. Gina then reveals that the group that tried to kill him did not belong to either the Assassins nor Templars, and have been causing problems for both groups for around a year now. A mole within Abstergo alerted the Assassins of their discovery regarding Jin's lineage and how it links to the group that tried to kill him.

Jin deduces that the reason he was taken by the Assassins is because they need him to relive his ancestor's memories and figure out why his life is in danger, Roberto confirms this. Gina explains that once they reach their hideout, she will introduce him to the rest of the team and their animus. Realising that he is safest with the Assassins, Jin doesn't argue or resist what's about to come next.

Uncovering the Preservers of Humanity[]

"Of course I have an Irish ancestor. They really got around back in the day."
―Jin during his exploration of Arthur Kavanagh's memories, 2022

Some time later, the group arrive at a hideout in Jersey City. Jin and the others exit the back of the van and he meets the driver, Samantha Maguire, introducing herself as a techie and not a field agent like Gina and Robbie. Jin and the Assassins enter the hideout and immediately Sam brings out a black briefcase with neon blue lights, unpacking it she reveals its an Animus. Calling it the Animus HR-9, Sam expresses pride in her Animus before informing Jin that they can get started whenever he's ready. Not one to waste time, Jin immediately enters the Animus.

Jin in the Animus

Jin loading into his ancestor's memories

Jin begins exploring the genetic memories of his Irish ancestor Arthur Kavanagh much to his surprise at having a white ancestor. Jin witnesses Kavanagh's first encounter with this mysterious group in 1581 but desynchronizes shortly after when his Arthur performs a Leap of Faith. Jin violently throws up as his subconscious rejects the simulation, unable to differentiate between Jin and Arthur causing Jin to enter fight or flight mode in the midst of experiencing a Leap of Faith. Sam reassures him that he is fine and that the simulation wasn't real, it was just replaying Arthur's memories. Jin, still in shock, expresses how different that felt compared to a Helix game. Despite this, Sam compliments Jin on his natural affinity for the Animus and for going as long as he did as most do not take so well to entering the Animus their first time.

Gina asks Jin would like to take a break or continue going. Having regained his bearings, Jin agrees to re-enter the animus. Jin continues to progress through Arthur's memories from 1581 to 1582 up until Arthur is imprisoned in Italy and meets a man named Kieran O'Connor. The memory then suddenly begins to grow unstable and he is ejected from it. The group express their confusion, leading Sam to run a diagnostic. Regardless, Gina tells Jin to take a break now that they already have a lot to work with after having discovered the name of the group. Gina orders Sam to look up any information on the Preservers of Humanity and who Kieran O'Connor was once her diagnostic is complete.

Following the completion of Sam's diagnostic, she explains to the team what happened. In the current memory Jin was reliving, Arthur was recalling another memory following his discovery of who Kieran O'Connor was. She further adds that the animus was having trouble processing the simulated memory and Arthur's recollection of another memory at the time. Robbie asks what they can do with Sam explaining that if they place Jin in the memory Arthur was recalling and he synchronizes with it, Jin may be able to progress further with Arthur's memories in the 1580s.

With that Gina tells everyone to take a break but knows full well Sam will want to research into the Preservers and O'Connor on her own. During this time, Jin gets to know Gina and Sam more, learning more about the Assassins and Templars as well. Robbie is apprehensive of him, making his knowledge of Jin's criminal past known. Jin however, counters Robbie, stating that he at least isn't a killer. The two eventually come to verbal blows with Robbie arguing that he only kills "bad people" with Jin reminding him that murder is still murder.

Robbie throws the first punch with Jin following suit. Jin is able to land one blow before Gina breaks up the fight, reprimanding both of them for their immaturity. Gina reminds them that they are a team now and they're going to have to get along or else. Aggravated at this, Jin goes to bed. While in bed, he has a nightmare of his mother and the night he found her body.

The next day, Jin wakes up and meets with the others. Robbie goes on to apologise to Jin for his hostility as well as punching him, still holding a grudge Jin meets him with scornful silence. Sam awkwardly breaks the tension and informs the group of her findings, and that she basically has none. There are no mentions of the Preservers and the only information she can find on O'Connor is that he was Irish, a noble, and secretly a Templar and that he died in 1587. After hearing this, Jin expresses his confidence in finding the truth in the Animus.

Jin loads into a simulation of Arthur's memories, while inside Sam reminds him that he needs to synchronize with Arthur's earlier memories in order to progress further in 1582. Jin is subsequently loaded into Waterford, Ireland 1570, where Arthur is a child. Jin witnesses the death of Arthur's childhood friend James O'Connor before being pushed forward to 1577. During this time Jin experiences the grief Arthur goes through during the next seven years and witnesses the self destructive nature he went through. Seeing similarities in his own life following his mother's death Jin couldn't help but empathise with his ancestor.

Jin synchronizes with the memories that Arthur recalls while in Italy in 1582 and is loaded back into that memory, now able to progress without conflicting memories. Following this, Jin learns of the existence of the Preservers of Humanity through Arthur's memories and continues to progress through them until 1586. Jin is brought out of the Animus much to his dismay, Sam warns him that too much exposure could have bad consequences. Jin then proceeds to admit it gets a little confusing going through all these years in Arthur's life to only find out he's been in the Animus for a few hours. With that, Gina ends the session for today praising Jin for all the information he recovered.

This leads Jin to ask what happens to him when they get what they need from him. Speaking up Sam says that he can join them and become an Assassin, joking that he's "half way there" already because of his ancestor. Robbie cynically adds its that or die, Jin morbidly states that there isn't much choice there. Gina, sympathetically tells him that now he's a target of both Abstergo and the Preservers, he's safest with the Assassins. She wishes that he really did have the free choice to choose but his options were limited thanks to outside forces. Disheartened by the news, Jin leaves the hideout claiming to need some fresh air.

Outside, Jin is contemplating things and realises before he became a target, he didn't have much of a life before. He was just repeating the same negative cylces and harming himself and others, Jin ponders that maybe joining the Assassins and fighting for a noble cause isn't so bad after all and that maybe it would somehow honor his mom. Robbie arrives and stands beside Jin silently, Jin is still angry at Robbie and prepares to leave until he is asked to stop.

Robbie then sincerely apologises, stating that he gets really serious when it comes to Assassin and Templar stuff. It is then he reveals to Jin how his and Gina's parents were killed - during an attack on their home. Robbie reveals through a flashback that Abstergo came to abduct him and his sister due to their ancestry and their parents died so they could escape. He expresses to Jin how much he hates Abstergo and that when people don't take the Assassin-Templar seriously, it sets him off. He apologises once more and also expresses empathy that Abstergo have now made it impossible for him to return to his old life.

Hearing this story causes Jin to reevaluate his negative feelings toward Robbie, realising that they both have similar stories and now they have similar temperaments because of it. After a few moments alone, Jin re-enters the hideout.

Escape[]

Jin re-enters the Animus and experiences Arthur's memories until 1587, where he assassinates O'Connor and learns of the existence of the Armor of Ares - a Piece of Eden capable of memory manipulation on a global scale. Jin exits the Animus, asking if they got what they wanted. Gina confirms that now that they know about the Preservers and what they stand for, they need to look further into Arthur's memories and see if he found the Armor of Ares. With that, Gina goes on to contact William Miles. While she does this, Sam looks more into Arthur's life after 1587 through the database and discovers that Arthur died in Osaka, Japan in 1615. Jin and Robbie express their confusion at what Arthur was doing in Japan, Sam tells them that there was only one way to find out, looking toward the Animus.

Following their exchange, Jin approaches the window of their hideout and sees a car approaching. He notifies the other Assassins who realise this can't be anything good, Gina orders Jin and Sam to pack and get in the van as fast as they can while they deal with whoever's in the car. Gina and Robbie go on to meet the intruders, revealing themselves to be none other than the man and woman who attacked Jin. They introduce themselves simply as Maria and Frederic, feigning friendliness they "kindly" ask for the Assassins to hand over Jin. Robbie refuses cursing them out, Gina asks how they even found them and Maria reveals that they put a tracker on Jin when Abstergo grabbed him.

Robbie's impulsiveness gets the better of him and he immediately charges toward the two Preservers, however Maria shoots him in the shoulder calling it a warning shot. In her earpierce, Sam notifes Gina that all the essentials are loaded up. With that, Gina deploys a smoke bomb knowing that they are outmatched she helps Robbie and leads him to the van. As they enter the van, Gina searches for a tracker on Jin before throwing it out as Sam speedily drives off. As they flee, Gina begins patching up Robbie. Panicked, Sam reveals that the Preservers are following and are hot on their tail.

The Preservers begin open firing on the Assassins' van but Sam is driving in such an erratic and unpredictable way where the Preservers are having difficulty shooting their tires. Robbie curses himself for letting himself get shot by the Preservers. Jin offers to drive instead of Sam, having drove a frew getaway cars in his past. Agreeing, Sam hands over the wheel to Jin and Gina comes up with an idea on her own. She tells Sam to continue tending to Robbie while she gets in the passenger seat next to Jin. Pulling out a magnum from the dashboard, she tells Jin to do what he can to get them out of harm's way.

Rolling down her windows, Gina begins shooting at the Preservers and engages in a temporary firefight with Maria. Eventually, Gina manages to shoot and crack the window to the Preservers' car, obscuring their vision and causing them to veer off the road. Following this, Jin accelerates the van and drives them to their escape.

Jin celebrates their escape before being reminded by an annoyed Robbie that he's been shot. Still icy with Robbie, Jin tells him that he'll walk it off with Gina agreeing, revealing he will survive his injury. Sam adds on that he won't be able to return to the field for a while though because of his shoulder, wrapping it up in a sling. Robbie tries to argue with Sam but Gina uses her authority as the elder sister and leader, telling him the decision is final.

With that out of the way, Jin asks where they're going to next now that they're hideout was snuffed out. Gina notifies them that the closest city is New York and that they'll have to regroup there.

Searching for the Armor of Ares[]

"Me and him are a lot alike, I get turning to bad people when you're in desperate need for sanctuary."
―Jin alluding to his criminal past when discussing Lonan Kavanagh's conversion to the Templar Order

Not long passes before the group reach a hotel in Queens and proceed to set up in their motel room. Gina then goes on to announce her new plan, that they will continue the search for the Armor of Eden through Arthur's memories and also train Jin. Everyone is surprised at this but Gina reminds everyone that Robbie is currently benched due to his injury and having 2 field agents is better than one.

Both apprehensive and confused, Jin asks how training him will work - it will take years. Sam interjects, explaining that through the Bleeding Effect Jin could inherit decades of training in only a few days. Jin asks if that means they will be going back to Arthur's earlier years, when he began his training but Gina explains that is possible to gain his ancestor's abilities merely by living out what Arthur did.

Following their discussion, Sam readies up the Animus allowing Jin to enter it. Sam proceeds to load up a memory further down in his DNA sequence to the year 1614. As the simulation formulates around him, Jin finds himself in Honshu, Japan but not in the avatar of Arthur - instead he is someone else. The ancestor's memories Jin has been loaded into is the Assassin Lonan Kavanagh, Arthur's son.

After spending a small amount of time reliving Lonan's memories, Jin temporarily emerged from the Animus and questions why he was reliving the memories of Arthur's son. Sam, critiquing her own oversight, tells Jin that she forgot that genetic memory of an individual ceases upon the conception of the next ancestor in the subject's bloodline. A worried Jin asks what they do now, Gina assures everyone that Lonan is with Arthur in Japan, and judging from the conversation that they witnessed between the two, it can be assumed that Lonan will continue Arthur's mission after the latters death in 1615. After hearing this, Jin returns to Lonan's memories.

Jin is placed in late November 1614 and relives Lonan's experiences during the Siege of Osaka. He witnesses Arthur's murder on 3 June 1615, which even saddens Jin himself after having relived his memories a few days prior. Jin concludes the first portion of Lonan's memories, exiting the Animus after Lonan is injured following his framing for the murder of his father and the Japanese Mentor.

Emerging from the Animus, he sees that everyone are as surprised as he is. Gina conveys her shock at the way Arthur died, hoping he would have gone out in better circumstances. Robbie desires for Lonan to kill Ichiro and avenge his dad but Sam interjects that he has all the Assassins after him now, not liking where this story will go. On that note, it is now night time and Gina puts a pin on their Animus session for the day. Following this, Jin shows concern for Robbie and asks him how he is doing, Robbie is otherwise fine but desires to get back at the Preservers. Jin also expresses his desire to fight them too but Gina chimes in that he still needs to improve his skills first, telling him that they'll have a training session the next day.

That night, Jin experiences a nightmare of him, as Lonan, witnessing Arthur's death as Ichiro stands over him. Staring into Arthur's lifeless eyes, morphs the dream into a memory of his childhood, when he found his mother's body with Maria now standing over it. Waking up from this, Jin briefly ponders if the Preservers killed his mother but his thoughts are intruded upon when he hears Sam sneaking out. Suspicious, Jin, via the Bleeding Effect tails her via the rooftops above.

Surprised at what he is capable of, Jin ends up following Sam to Forest Hills where she stops outside a house. Perched above a treetop, he watches as she appears to be in deep thought before she turns away and heads back to their motel.

The day after Jin followed Sam into Forest Hills, he begins the day with Gina as she tests out what skills he gained from Lonan. Gina instructs him to follow her as they freerun through Queens, the buildings are short and thus lack danger in case Jin falls. She is impressed by Jin's rate of adaptability, complimenting him on how it looked as if he'd known to freerun his whole life, Jin jokes that it's in his blood. Jin mentions how he used to be afraid of heights, but after performing a variety of Leaps of Faith and the vivid-like nature of the Animus, it has helped him conquer his fear.

Gina goes on to tell Jin that in a day's time, they will test his hand to hand capabilities. On that note, they return to the motel and Jin returns to Lonan's memories. He witnesses Lonan's conversion to the Templar Order, he exits the Animus in complete disbelief at the way events unfolded, expressing that he needed a minute. The others are surprised as well, saddened that Lonan was so desperate that he had to turn to the Templars. However, Jin defends Lonan stating that he was betrayed and the Assassins turned against him, but Ichiro needed to be stopped - Lonan had no other choice. The Assassin not so subtly convey their concern that Jin is rationalising Lonan's choice. Despite this though, he asks to be returned to Lonan's memories which Sam obliges.

Jin completes another portion of Lonan's memories and exits the Animus. He is still willing to continue but Gina orders against it, telling him how dangerous it is. Gina then goes on to end the session for the day, with it already being nightfall. Later on in the night, when Gina and Robbie are asleep Jin finds Sam preparing to sneak out again, However, this time he calls her out and asks her where she is going. He tells her that he is suspicious of her behaviour but hasn't brought it up to Gina because he isn't a snitch, Sam reassures him that her sneaking out isn't nefarious.

He challenges her to prove it, still not buying her story. Sighing, she ushers for him to go with her. As they make their way to Forest Hills, Sam tries to make small talk asking him how he's feeling about learning Lonan was a Templar. Jin remains firm in his sympathy for Lonan, mentioning that growing up he needed to do the same - not as extreme, but there were times where he had to seek sanctuary with criminals out of desperation. He also neglects to share that he also sees sense in the Templars' ideology, having experienced the worst humanity has to offer and also sharing responsibility in it, he wonders if the Templars are right.

Sam acknowledges his feelings, also agreeing with Lonan's reasoning but expressing disappointment he had no other options. Finally, Sam leads Jin to the house she had visited, revealing it was her childhood home and her parents still live there. Surprised, he asks why she hasn't gone to see them but Sam reminds him that she is an Assassin and Abstergo could hurt them. Jin irritatedly asks her why she would give up a normal life for the Assassins but Sam reveals that she didn't, she joined them in desperation like Lonan did.

She recounts her past and tells Jin the story of how she joined the Assassins, explaining that she learned of Abstergo's shady antics during college. A righteous youth, she leaked their exploits to the dark web but was eventually discovered by them and they would have killed her if she hadn't been rescued by two Assassins. When she was brought to safety, she joined the Brotherhood for her own protection and lost contact with her parents to keep them safe.

Upon hearing this, Jin apologises of being suspicious of her. He tells her of his mother's suicide, sharing that he didn't actually believe it to be the case, and explains that he was initially angry at Sam for believing she chose the Assassins over her family, upset that he no longer had one. Sam accepts his apology and expresses her own condolences for his mother. Thanking her, he then suggests they return to the motel. The next day, he continues searching through Lonan's memories.

Jin progresses through Lonan's memories and witnesses his Templar ancestor help eradicate the Japanese Brotherhood, following this Sam tries to place him into a later memory. However, they reach an obstacle when Jin suddenly witnesses his other ancestor, Takao Mariko give birth to a baby boy, Lonan's son. Jin exits the Animus, angered that they have been set back once again by being placed into the memories of yet another ancestor, stating that it feelsl ike they have barely made any progress. Trying to remain optimistic, Sam reminds him that at least they know the Armor is most likely to still be in Japan.

Gina assures Jin that they are still making progress, and are way more ahead than Abstergo and the Preservers seeing as they don't have access to Jin's DNA. Looking around, Jin notices that Robbie is gone and asks where he is. Sam tells him that Robbie left to get supplies a few hours prior with Gina adding that he should be back by now. However, a few more hours go by and it is now nightfall, there is still no sign of Robbie and everyone is beginning to grow concerned.

Sam then sees that she has received a message from Zhao Baozhai a high ranking member of Abstergo Industries, that Robbie has been taken by Abstergo agents and is currently en route to an Abstergo Foundation facility located in China. Zhao states that in order for them to return Robbie to safety, Jin would need to willingly surrender himself to Abstergo so they can study the memories of the Kavanagh family.

Rescuing Robbie[]

"I'm sorry to hear that, Mr. Chen. You're more like dad than I'd thought."
―Baozhai revealing herself as Jin's half-sister, translated from Mandarin

Gina immediately begins getting to work on retrieving Robbie. She makes a call to William Miles and shares the contents of the video message with him. Miles acknowledges what he has been told and arranges for funds to be transferred to them so that they may board a flight to Beijing.

The group then begin hastily packing, Jin and Sam can see Gina is worried but she is making an effort to appear calm. Sam's guilt gets the better of her and she confesses that Robbie's capture must have been her fault, explaining that she spent the last few nights sneaking out to observe her family in Forest Hills. This is where Gina snaps, getting in Sam's face she curses her out and calls her irresponsible and stupid, threatening to never forgive her if anything happens to Robbie.

Jin steps in between them and urges for the two to stop, admitting that what Sam did was stupid and that he should have said something sooner. Gina then turns her fury on to him, raging at him for letting Sam do what she did. However, Jin cuts her off and tells her there is no time to point fingers and the main priority right now is figuring out a plan to save Robbie.

Gina relents, calming down and agrees. She apologises to Sam, lamenting that he is the only family she has left. Jin sympathises and assures her that they will get him back. That same day, Jin and the Assassins board a flight to Beijing. The group begin formulating plans to rescue Robbie but none of them are sustainable, this is when Jin ultimately decides that Robbie's best chance at release is if he actually gives himself up.

Gina and Sam argue against this but Jin states they have no other choice, that they will use the time they have to continue training Jin so that he is able to escape Abstergo once the trade has been complete. Wary of this plan of action, Gina reluctantly accepts much to the dismay of Sam but Jin states that Robbie's kidnapping is partly his fault and this is his chance to rectify it. Gina thanks Jin for doing this for her brother, hugging him.

Arriving in China 13 hours later, the Assassins rent a motel and remain there as they prepare to make the trade. However, an anxious Jin requests to enter the Animus and search into the memories of Lonan's son. To see if he can aid the Assassins a little more in locating the Armor of Ares before being forced to do so by Abstergo. Gina grants Jin this request and asks Sam to set up an Animus session. After doing so, he enters the Animus and is placed in Edo, Japan in 1627.

Jin would relive the memories of Takao Hayato's early years, beginning in 1627 and ending in 1637, with the completion of his Assassin training. The next day, Jin and Gina train to test out what abilites he acquired from Hayato. During their sparring match, Gina remarks how impressed she is at his fast developing abilities and even expresses optimism that Jin may be able to escape Abstergo himself. However, Jin remains silent on this - having not revealed his true reason for wanting to give himself up to Abstergo. It is because Jin believes that the Templars may have a point.

Following their sparring session, Jin and the others begin preparations to have him give himself up. They then leave their hotel and make their way over to the Abstergo Foundation facility located in Beijing. Jin decides to go in alone, unsure if the Templars will hold up their end of the bargain and wanting Gina and Sam to have a chance to escape. Entering inside the facility, he is met by force from the guards but immediately surrenders. He is taken to the office of the facility's head, Zhao Baozhai, before being left alone with her.

Baozhai, mockingly expresses her surprise at an Assassin with the concept of honor. Jin corrects her, stating that he isn't an Assassin and demands for Robbie to be released. As a woman of her word, she complies and calls in for Robbie's release and pulls up the live feed on a monitor to prove her point. Following this, she then introduces herself as Zhao Baozhai but Jin bluntly expresses his lack of care. Sharing that one of the reasons he gave himself up is so he could help the Templars find the Armor, revealing that he believes their path to peace may be the best option, using himself as an example of humanity's flaws and how freewill is a dangerous goal.

Baozhai expresses both her surprise and approval at Jin's views, and their alignments with Templar ideology. She asks why the change of heart and Jin reveals he has experienced humanity at its worst. He tells her of when he was misled into taking part in an execution of a rival gang, and witnessed the horrors humans were capable of firsthand - as well as this, he confesses that he was forced to shoot an innocent young girl. Baozhai expresses her sympathies, off-handedly stating that he was "more like Dad than [she] thought".

Jin asks what she means and why she was referring to his father in a shared contect. This is when Baozhai explains, in a nonchalant demeanour, that the reason she brought Robbie all the way to China was because she wanted to meet him, to save him from the Assassins and offer him a place in the New World. She then reveals that she is Jin's half-sister.

Working with Abstergo[]

Jin and Baozhai are walking through the Abstergo Foundation facility, Jin is still in shock at the fact Baozhai is his half-sister. He asks her how this is possible but she ignores the question, asking him how much progress he and the Assassins made on locating the Armor of Ares. Jin fills her in, explaining that they tracked the Armor to Japan through the memories of the Kavanagh family but are still unaware of its final location. However, Baozhai already knows of this from having access to the Templar's historical records on Lonan Kavanagh - despite this, she still believes that the Armor may be somewhere in Japan, revealing that Lonan remained there until his death in 1646. But the only way they can find out is through Hayato's memories.

Following this, Baozhai asks what it is he knows of the Preservers and he shares what he has learned, their history, their goals and that they too want to find the Armor through Jin's genetic memories. After their discussion, Baozhai states that she is on a time crunch for Abstergo and urges Jin to re-enter the Animus and further research into Hayato's memories. However, Jin puts his foot down and demands to know more about his half-sister. Offering to compromise, she promises to explain when Jin has made significant progress. Begrudgingly, Jin agrees and enters the Animus.

Jin spends the next few hours reliving a portion of Hayato's memories before being removed from the Animus. He meets an Abstergo employee, Huang Min, she introduces herself and informs him that she has been assigned to observe and monitor Jin's Animus sessions. After questioning why he had been ejected from Hayato's memories, Min informs him that Baozhai had ordered her to take him out to reduce the risk of negative effects. He requests to see his half-sister in order to get the answers he wished for but Min tries to prevent him from seeing her, telling him that she is in a meeting.

Lacking care, Jin pushes passed her and is then stopped by the guards disallowing him from leaving his complex. However, tired of being left in the dark and treated like a tool, he knocks out the guards and begins fighting his way through the facility. Jin manages to take down scores of Abstergo agents but is eventually overwhelmed when he is tased into unconsciousness.

Waking up a few hours later, he is met by both Baozhai and Min. His elder sister chastises him, sharing that she believed him to be different but he was just as violent and incapable of reason than his Assassin ancestors. Angered, Jin retorts her stating that if Abstergo hadn't treated him like a pet he wouldn't have acted out. Baozhai expresses her frustration and reiterates that she will tell him what he needs to know when he made significant process, Jin argues he has but Baozhai disagrees before leaving him with Min.

Begrudgingly, Jin says the Assassins and Templars are as bad as each other. Min apologises for his treatment by Abstergo, sharing Jin's feelings. He expresses that he thought the Templars' goals were the most assurable, but having witnessed what the Templars were capable of and what they did through Hayato's memories, Jin was beginning to have second thoughts. Min reveals that she was forced to join the Templars when her research with Abstergo led to her uncovery of the Assassin-Templar conflict, and that she was offered a "choice" to join the Templars or die. However, she disagrees with the Assassins' ways and believe that their goal is impossible and naive. She apologises for everything Jin has been forced to go through but reminds him that finding the Armor of Ares is the top priority right now.

Eventually, Jin returns to the Animus and continues to relive Hayato's memories. After a few hours and experiencing another year in Hayato's life, he is once more pulled from the Animus. He is met by both Baozhai and Min this time.

Baozhai looks happier, congratulating him on his progress stating her belief that she feels they are getting closer. Min suggests they call today's session, Baozhai then tells Jin that she is ready to tell him what he wishes to know. Jin and Baozhai are wandering through the facility, its silent between them and Jin is waiting for answers. Sensing his growing impatience, she finally speaks up - revealing that she is his illegitimate older half-sister. Their father, Junfeng, sired her several years before Jin's birth and was present in her life for some years before vanishing when she was 6, expressing that she had always hated him for that.

Wishing to be able to support her mother, she tells Jin that she studied hard during school which allowed her to get into Peking University. Abstergo then took an interest in her work and immediately hired her out of graduation, and eventually she impressed them enough where she was offered a place within the Templar Order. Jin expresses his dissatisfaction with the story but Baozhai is unsympathetic to him. He asks how she knew about him and Baozhai confesses that she didn't know about him until she was tasked with finding the Armor of Ares. After tracing the Kavanagh bloodline to Jin, she then discovered they were related through his records.

This leads Jin to realise that the reason she kidnapped Robbie was to use him as bait, which she confirms. He questions why she didn't kill him when she had gotten what she needed, Baozhai confesses she wanted to earn his trust and show him the Templars aren't as bad as he was probably led to believe. Unswayed by this, he mentions the atrocities he witnessed the Japanese Templars cause while reliving the memories of Hayato, but Baozhai counters this by telling him that the Templars have had moments where they have lost their way, similar to the Assassins. She reminded him of how the Assassins also lost their way when they were being led by Ito Ichiro.

Jin asks what it is she wanted from him when she didn't even know him, Baozhai confesses she longed to be close to him due to their familial connection. She reveals that her mother died before she graduated college, leaving her with no known family and that she knows Jin is in the same situation. As his older sister, she cannot help but feel protective of him and wants to keep him safe from the Templar's wrath as well as the danger life as an Assassin would pose. As well as this, they are the only family the other have left and she wanted to form a connection with him. Understanding this, Jin nods in agreement.

Baozhai, sensing Jin's reluctance to embrace the Templar cause, asks that if Hayato's memories have skewed his desire to aid the Templar Order. Jin admits that he is unsure now, that he initially thought the Templar's goals made the most sense but having seen what they would resort to to achieve it, he is reconsidering. He sees the pros and cons of both sides, unaware of what side he truly wants to back. Acknowledging this, Baozhai encourages her brother to take the time she needs and urges him to rest for the remainder of the day before returning to the Animus.

Allying with Min[]

At nightfall, Jin returns to his quarters where he finds Min waiting for him. He asks her what it is she wants and Min reveals she needs to tell him something, that Baozhai isn't who she seems to be. Min then reveals that Baozhai had an involvement in the death of Jin's mother.

Shocked at what he has just been told, Jin asks her how it is she knew this. Min reveals that she had learned about Xiu's murder after being assigned to work at Beijing's Abstergo foundation. Prior to learning of Jin and his mother's connection to the Kavanagh family, Baozhai secretly ordered the death of Chen Xiu due in part because of her resentment toward her father for leaving and beginning a new family. Jin questions why he wasn't killed as well and Min tells him that Baozhai was unwilling to kill a child.

Angered by the truth of his mother's death, as well as Baozhai's deception, his mind is made up on where he stands - allying with the Assassins. Jin subsequently requests the aid of Min, thanking her for revealing the truth to him, he believes that she is the only one he can trust. He asks her if that she could some way send the footage gathered from his Animus sessions to the Assassins, so that they have a leg up against the Templars. Min is reluctant to do this, fearful of what will happen if the Templars find out what they are doing, eventually she declines to help and expresses her sympathies before leaving.

The next day, Jin returns to the Animus and completes a significant portion of Hayato's memories from 1641 to 1643. During a particular memory, Jin witnesses a discussion between Hayato and the Assassin Xú Jing in 1642. Jin gains a new perspective on the Assassins and humanity itself from Jing's words - she tells Hayato that she believes humans can achieve peace through education because if she and Hayato have the capacity to work to better and enlighten themselves, so does everyone else. Jin finally understands and believes the Assassins' goals to be the right one.

Jin is then pulled from the Animus. He is once more met by Min, Jin rubs his head stating all this time in the Animus with three different ancestors couldn't be good for his brain. Min tells him that in the past, it could be deadly, however with the improvement of Animus technology the harsh effects have been reduced significantly and he should be fine.

Asking where Baozhai is, he expresses his desire to confront her but Min opts against it knowing she would simply deny it. However, Min reveals that she has had a change of mind and confesses that after viewing the live feed of Jin's Animus session with Hayato, she found Jing's words to be profound. Confused at what she is getting at, he asks what she means and Min tells him that the point she is getting at is that she wants to help him.

Pleased to hear this, Jin thanks Min for her support but admits he isn't sure of how he is supposed to leak footage to the Assassins. Min subsequently reveals that the footage recovered from Hayato's memories is encrypted within the Abstergo Cloud, located in the servers within the basement level. Understanding what she's alluding too, he surmises that he needs to go to the servers and recover them but admits he isn't good at hacking. Min explains that it will be simple, and provides him with a device able to hack into the servers and downloaded the encrypted memories - but decrypting them might be the issue. He isn't worried about this, knowing Sam will be able to decrypt the memory data.

Jin then asks why he has to do all of this and Min accurately states that he is more valuable than her, if he's caught they will just increase security but if she's caught her fate may be worse. In addition, she also tells Jin that she will rig the cameras to loop old footage. Following this, Min returns home for the night and leaves the door to his cell unlocked. Jin bides his time before he makes his move to download Hayto's memories, he exits his cell and begins to sneak his way to the servers. While on his way, he sees the holding cells of the other captured descendants of notable Assassins and Templars, feeling sympathy for their plight.

Managing to avoid any guards thanks to the stealth abilities he acquired from his ancestors, Jin successfully makes his way to the Abstergo mainframe and subsequently downloads Hayato's memory data before returning back to his cell. That morning, he meets up with Min before the start of his Animus session and hands her the hard drive in which he stored a copy of Hayato's memories. Min thanks him for this and assures him she will send it over to the Assassins, however, as Jin had not located the final resting place of the Armor of Ares - she informs him he would need to hack into the mainframe again once he's concluded reliving Hayato's memories.

With that, Min readies the Animus and Jin returns to Hayato's memories.

Escape[]

Jin views Hayato's remaining memories, locating where he had left the pieces of the Armor in 1648. Following this, he emerges from the Animus and sees that he had spent the entire day reliving Hayato's memories and it is once again nightfall. Min informs him that everyone has gone home but it works in their favour as Baozhai is currently unaware that they have located the Armor of Ares, she tells him he will be able to sneak into the server room once more and have the Hayato's encrypted memories sent to the Assassins before Abstergo sets off to find them. After Jin acknowledges this, Min returns home for the night but not before repeating what she did before which helped Jin sneak through the facility.

Jin bleeding effect

Following Min's departure, Jin once again sneaks back into the server room and downloads Hayato's remaining memories before returning to his cell to sleep. While asleep he experiences a dream where he relives the most traumatic moments in his ancestor's lives - from Arthur witnessing James' death, Lonan watching his father's murder, and Hayato recovering Kenshin's body. Jin is then placed in the memory of finding his mother's body, and then being forced to kill the little girl four years prior.

Standing over the girl's body are Arthur, Lonan and Hayato - and behind them are their great accomplishments. It is in this moment, Jin realises what it means to be an Assassin, experiencing great pain ignites the drive to bring about its end. Jin fully embraces his identity as an Assassin.

The next day, Jin and Min are present in Baozhai's office as she overlooks the footage of Hayato's memories. Gleefully, she praises Jin for his success and informs the two that she will begin making preparations to recover the Armor pieces in Japan, expressing her desire to oversee the retrieval herself. Baozhai then tells Jin that he has greatly aided the Templar Order and was certain that a place for him would be found among their ranks soon, as well as this she assures Min that she will be greatly rewarded as well.

Following this, alarms begin to blare across the facility and the trio head to see the commotion and discover that it is being attacked. Baozhai demands to know who it is that is attacking and a security guard informs her that the Assassins are behind it all. Grinning, Jin reveals to Baozhai that they'd been feeding the Assassins information all along and that they no doubt have already gotten to the Armor pieces already. Shocked, she asks him why he did that and how she thought that he'd seen their way. Jin tells her that he did initially but he realised it was wrong to rob humanity of its freedom.

Suddenly, more security arrive to protect Baozhai and she orders them to apprehend Jin and Min. Jin fights off the first few guards, disarming one and taking one of their riot sticks before taking Min and leading her to safety. During this, Jin discovers a familiar katana which triggered the Bleeding Effect making him realise it was Hayato's sword, preserved and recovered by Abstergo. With Hayato's katana, Jin continues to defend himself against the other guards as he tries to simultaneously defend Min and find an escape route - however, Gina finally arrives. She and Jin fight off a wave of guards, with Jin recovered, the Assassins begin making their retreat.

As they make their escape Jin expresses his happiness to see her again while Gina compliments him on his improves skills. Finally escaping into the foundation's grounds, Jin shares his surprise that she managed to amass a strike team so fast. Gina seems confused, telling him that they'd contacted the Chinese Brotherhood and planned a breakout for some weeks now. Also confused, Jin reminds her that she had been sent the footage of Hayato's memories but Gina states that the Assassins received no such thing. Turning to Min, he activates his Eagle Vision and immediately sees she is no longer an ally. He asks her who she really sent the footage too, and she smugly tells him to "ask them" his self.

Jin, Gina and a small group of Assassin escorts are suddenly attacked by Maria and Frederic. The Assassins are promptly killed by Frederic as Maria engages with Jin and Gina. Although Gina is well trained and Jin has the skills of both Lonan and Hayato, they still struggle to keep up and defend against Maria - who is much more experienced than the two. With their escort dead, Frederic joins Maria in her duel against Jin and Gina.

The two are overwhelmed by Maria's deadly skills and Frederic's inhuman strength. Gina is knocked out and Jin is knocked to the ground by Frederic and Maria. Before they can kill the two Assassins, Min sees the helicopter taking off and notifies the pair of Preservers. Maria orders Frederic to stay while she escorts Min away. Jin calls out to Min as Frederic grabs him by the throat, he asks her why. Min tells him that the Assassins and Templars are a plight on the world and need to be removed, allowing humanity to progress on its own. She also tells him that she had lied about Baozhai killing his mother and really, her death was at the hands of the Preservers. Frederic sees Jin's eyes noticeably flare from rage and he grins.

With that, Min and Maria leave Jin with Frederic. Jin repeatedly kicks Frederic in the abdomen and manages to land a kick in his groin which causes the Preserver to drop Jin. Falling to his knees, he gasps for air and forces himself to recover as much air as he can before rolling out of the way of another attack. The two continue to fight and Jin puts up a valiant effort, but is knocked to the floor once again. Frederic climbs on top of him and begins to strangle the Assassin, as the light begins to leave his eyes, he leans in and whispers to him. Frederic tells him that when they found his mother, she put up a good fight, but he killed her when striking her too hard. They made her death look like a suicide.

On the verge of death, Robbie suddenly arrives and stabs Frederic in the back of the neck. However, in his last moments, Frederic utilises the last of his strength and grabs Robbie by the wrist and throws him overhead before attempting to finish off Jin. Dazed, Robbie sees Jin is in need of aid and tosses him a Hidden Blade he had brought over for him. Catching it, he proceeds to activate the bracer into Frederic's throat, killing him. His body falls on Jin and he struggles to push him off but Robbie gets up and helps him move the body. Jin thanks Robbie for helping him, asking him how he knew to come. Robbie states that he didn't and simply just didn't want to wait on the sidelines whilst everyone else risked their life, and had happened to find him in need of assistance.

The two then approach Gina and wake her up, Jin tells the two that he knows where the Armor pieces are located and that they need to notify the Assassins in Japan to get there before the Templars or Preservers do. They then make their escape to the hideout of the Chinese Brotherhood.

Recovering the Armor of Ares[]

Arriving there, he is greeted by Sam and she embraces him telling him that she is glad that he is alive and well. Despite their initial sweet greeting, he informs the Mentor of the Chinese Assassins of what he had told Gina and Robbie.

The Mentor acknowledges this, notifying Jin that he will contact the Assassins and arrange for him and his cell to be transported to Japan as soon as possible. Some hours later, Jin, Gina, Robbie and Sam are on a military plane en route to Japan. The pilot informs the Assassins over the speaker that a team led by Kiyoshi Takakura had successfully retrieved Ares' Sword from Kyoto with some casualties. As well as this, the team sent to recover the Shield in Tokyo have gone dark. Robbie expresses that this is good news. Jin is noticeably quiet which the others notice, they ask him what's up and he states that he believes this is all his fault. Sam asks how and Jin confesses that he willingly handed himself over to the Templars because he believed they could quickly put an end to the suffering in the world.

His team are shocked by this, but Jin continues and states that he eventually saw that their ways were wrong and tried to rectify it by sending the Assassins the footage of Hayato's memories. He then grows visibly angry at the thought of Min, mentioning that she preyed on his desperation and tricked him into retrieving the memories so she could keep the Preservers updated - and now good Assassins are dying because of his mistake. Gina reminds him that right now he is accompanying to make up for his mistake, and that should mean something to him.

Robbie adds that, while Min hoodwinked him, his actions came from a place of good and now they were going to stop both groups from acquiring the Armor. Sam adds in that she's sorry about what happened to his mother. However, Jin states that he is happy that he has some sort of closure and that she didn't willingly leave him. He can make peace with that.

The Assassins arrive in Japan some time later before heading over to the location of where Kakureta and the Hashimoto estate was formerly located. They arrive there to find Baozhai leading a team that is already searching the area, Gina orders Robbie and Sam to keep watch while she and Jin eliminate the Abstergo members. She promptly hands him a smoke bomb, the two throw it into the area and rush toward the agents engulfed in smoke. They assassinate a large amount of Abstergo agents before the smoke dissipates. With a small number left, Jin and Gina then assassinate the remaining agents.

Now alone, Baozhai confronts Jin who expresses her disappointment in his decision to ally with the Assassins. Despite this, Jin - now knowing Baozhai was not involved with his mother's murder - wants to reconcile somehow. He tells her that they don't have to fight and that their familial connection should overrule their dedication to the Assassins and Templars. Despite this, Baozhai reminds him of Lonan and Hayato, and how their nature as father and son bared no weight on their duties - no matter how hard they tried. Pleadingly, Jin states that the two of them are all that they have in the world but a dismissive Baozhai states that he made his choice when he betrayed her.

Suddenly a loud gunshot is heard and Jin realises Baozhai has been shot by Maria, accompanied by Min and another member of the Preservers. Gina immediately rushes into action and engages Maria, meanwhile Jin rushes to Baozhai and puts pressure on her wound. Calling out to Sam in desperation, he pleads for her to help Baozhai. Emerging from their hiding spots, they come to Jin's aid although Robbie expresses his reluctance to save a Templar regardless if she is Jin's half-sister or not. However, Sam reminds her that she is a high-ranking Templar and having her as a prisoner could be useful. Jin thanks the two before making his way to aid Gina who is struggling to combat both Maria and the other Preserver.

Jin and Gina are seperated with the former being forced to face Maria on his own while the latter engages the other. Using Hayato's katana against Maria, she defends herself through precision counters and blocks with her knife, as well as evading his strikes. During this, Maria taunts him saying that with all of his skills that he still cannot best her. Continuing, she states that he is on the wrong side of this fight, that the Assassins and Templars are two sides of one wrong coin. However, unlike his ancestors, Jin is not interested in debating philosophies.

Eventually, he manages to strike her arm - severing it with the katana. Jin then plunges the blade into her abdomen and whispers "that was for [his] mother" before watching her die. Following the events of the skirmish, Jin sees that Gina and Robbie managed to defeat the other Preserver member and detain Min.

He then approaches Sam to see how she is doing, however, Sam was unable to save Baozhai who had died from blood loss. Saddened by this, Jin states that he wished things could be different - empathising with Lonan and Hayato when they went through similar points. Closing her eyes, he gives her her final rights in Mandarin. Sam expresses her condolences but Jin states that while he didn't know her well, she was still his sister, and wished to have gotten to know her more.

Following this, Gina receives confirmation that the Assassin cell recovering the Shield in Tokyo were wiped out but one managed to escape with the Shield. Happy to hear this news, Jin and the others dig up the Chestplate from where Hayato had left it four decades prior. They then call to rendezvouz with the other Assassins at a specific location, taking Min with them in order to interrogate her once she awakened. As they made their way out of Kakureta, Jin expressed his desire to hunt down and eliminate the Preservers.

Ancestry[]

Unbenknownst to him, Jin and his mother had an Assassin ancestry being the descendants of the Kavanagh family.

Jin's earliest known ancestor was the Irish fisherman Finn Kavanagh and his wife Katherine in the mid-16th century. The couple settled in Waterford and had three children, Thomas, Arthur, and Ciara with the middle son going on to become Jin's next ancestor. In 1577, Arthur was rescued from being killed by the English Assassin Aleria Sinclair and later joined the Assassins. Arthur and Aleria married and had two children, Rose Kavanagh and Lonan Kavanagh - who would become a member of the Templar Order in Japan.

Lonan would encounter Takao Mariko, a Japanese woman and the daughter of a Templar. The two would enter a secret affair which would result in the birth of a son, Takao Hayato - who would join the Assassins later in life. Following his near-eradication of the Templar presence in Japan, Hayato would go on to rebuild the Assassin Brotherhood and during this time he would marry a noble woman, siring a daughter with her - Mei.

The Kavanagh bloodline would prosper throughout the centuries, extending well into the 21st century to Chen Xiu - becoming Jin's maternal line.

Personality and characteristics[]

Jin cared deeply for his mother and finding her deceaded body in their home greatly affected him well into his adult life, and being forced to murder a child when he was 19 piled on to Jin's trauma. From then on, he became withdrawn, rageful, selfish and violent, placing his grief into criminal activities such as theft and selling drugs. The sight of his mother's body continued to haunt him, causing him to suffer from recurring nightmares. Jin attempted to dull his pain through alcoholism and recreational drugs which in turn enhanced his already anti-social tendencies. Despite all this, Jin managed to develop a dark sense of humor which also helped him cope with the troubles in his life.

Prior to reliving the memories of his ancestors, Jin had a low opinion of humanity due to his poor experiences in life which naturally aligned his views with the Templar Order. Although he held this view, Jin still had a desire to do the right thing whenever possible due to his guilt over having killed a little girl.

Through exploring the memories of his Assassin ancestor, Arthur Kavanagh, he was led to believe that the Assassins' were the 'good guys' and Templars the bad. However, his views broadened and greyed during his time reliving the memories of his Templar ancestor, Lonan Kavanagh, and found his view to gradually shift to theirs due to his past experiences dealing with the worst humanity had to offer. Jin was led to believe that achieving true peace was through controlling the masses. It was this belief that led him to to align with Abstergo for a brief time.

Eventually, Jin would firmly fall on the side of the Assassins after having relived the genetic memories of the Assassin Takao Hayato, Lonan's son and Arthur's grandson. Jin directly experienced the horrific acts that the Templars were capable of committing to achieve their goals, he began to distance himself from their ideology. As well as this, Jin's faith that humanity can grow and change was restored following a conversation he had witnessed between Hayato and the Assassin Xú Jing. From then on, Jin was convinced that the Assassins', while flawed, their ideology was truly the correct path forward.

Equipment and skills[]

Despite being in and out of juvie as a teenager, Jin proved to be a skilled criminal in his adulthood. Able to blend in with a crowd, pickpocket others, sell drugs and steal a variety of valuable products all without being caught. He was also born with the extra-sensory ability known as Eagle Vision which he utilised during his time as a criminal to distinguish friend or foe - as well as this, he was able to tag targets.

When Jin relived the memories of Lonan Kavanagh, he gained some of his ancestor's abilities which included freerunning and some combat skills. He displayed a profiency in freerunning when he briefly tested out what he had gained from Lonan with Gina Garcia while in New York. Jin also inherited the skills of Lonan's son, Hayato, having relieved his formative years which included his Assassin training. Hayato's abilities expanded Jin's skillset which now allowed him to dual-wield.

With these skills, Jin was able to take down scores of Abstergo agents single-handedly, and go head-to-head with the likes of Maria and Frederic - professional killers with years of experience.

Jin is fluent in both Mandarin and English
