Louis Chaput (1657 - 1694) was a member of the French Brotherhood of Assassins and a Master Assassin during the Iroquois Wars.
A Piece of Eden tracker, Louis travelled to the territory of New France alongside his desciple Ramona Lucia in order to eradicate the Templar presence in the French territory and locate a Piece of Eden that had garnered the interest of both the Assassins and Templars. The French Assassin would meet the Néhinaw warrior Küpeyakwüskonam, who would aid Ramona and himself in their task.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Louis was born into a noble household in Paris as the only child of two Assassins who used their wealth to aid the Brotherhood. From an early age, Louis was unknowingly trained as an Assassin by his parents before being formally inducted into the Brotherhood at 17 in 1674. Louis continued to serve the Assassins before becoming an unofficial Piece of Eden tracker some years later, having recovered a variety of Isu inventions and returning them to the Assassins.
In 1687, Louis encountered the orphan beggar Ramona Lucia when she pickpocketed him and fled with his money. After cornering the girl, he found himself impressed by her cunning, drive and skill and offered her a place within the Brotherhood. After accepting, Louis became Ramona's mentor and trained her as an Assassin before inducting her into the Brotherhood in 1692.
Hunting the Eden Engine[]
In 1693, Louis and Ramona were tasked by the Assassin Council to locate a Piece of Eden in North America that the Templars were also in search for. Departing France, the two Assassins boarded a ship and made their way to North America. In summer of that year, shortly before arriving Louis informs an excited Ramona to remain focused on the task at hand.
Some time later, in Southern Ontario, Canada, New France. Louis discovers a lead relating to the Piece of Eden they are hunting, learning that the Mohawk war chief and Templar Canaqueese has been heavily involved in the current war between the indigenous tribes. Reunting with Ramona in a tavern, the two trade information in hopes of piecing together a lead with Ramona informing him of what she had discovered from a low-ranking Templar she had assassinated.
A few months later in early 1694, having found a lead on Canaqueese's comings and goings, Louis and Ramona make their way to a French military camp to learn more of Canaqueese whereabouts. However, upon arriving they find that the camp has been massacred. The two begin investigating, speculating that it was attack from the Iroquois before learning the massacre was orchestrated by a single individual. Surprised and frustrated, the two wonder what to do next now that they were at a dead end. Louis is then pounced on from above, before being pinned into the snow by the indigenous warrior Küpeyakwüskonam.
With a blade to his throat, Ramona immediately pulls her flintlock on the warrior threatening to shoot. Louis manages to deesculate the situation, remarking on how he is impressed with Küpeyakwüskonam being able to get the drop on him. Louis, however, manages to slip through Küpeyakwüskonam's grasp and the trio enter a standoff. Küpeyakwüskonam questions why they are in search of the War Chief and what business they have with the French. Surprised at his ability to speak French, Louis introduces Ramona and himself and asks if he was the one who killed all the soldiers in the camp which Küpeyakwüskonam confirms. Louis then asks what it is that Küpeyakwüskonam wants with Canaqueese with the warrior outright confirming his aim to kill him, much to Ramona's disapproval, Louis then reveals his goal to Küpeyakwüskonam. The Assassin proposes that the three work together to accomplish their common goal, with Ramona hastily brandishing her hidden blade and offering to kill him instead.
Küpeyakwüskonam declines initially, expressing his mistrust of outsiders but Louis manages to convince him, revealing that he and Ramona were hunting down the men that threatened the sanctity of his land. Reluctantly, Küpeyakwüskonam agrees to aid them but only until they locate and kill Canqueese.
Working with Küpeyakwüskonam[]
A few days after the encounter between Küpeyakwüskonam and the Assassins. The tension between the three were critically high, Louis requested to learn Küpeyakwüskonam's name which he refused to give. Meanwhile, Ramona herself was mistrustful of Küpeyakwüskonam, unsure of whether he was a member of the Iroquois that fought against the French and other tribes. The two would bicker or outright insult each other during most of this time, leaving Louis to have to play mediator.
While on horseback on their way to the Lake Ontario area, Küpeyakwüskonam recollects the hidden blade Ramona brandished. Cursious, he directly asks her what the weapon was and how she was able to conceal it under her wrist. Ramona is coy with information, criticising the fact that Küpeyakwüskonam feels fine with asking her the complexities of her weapon but refuses to give up any information about his self. Louis reprimands Ramona, stating that they are the outsiders in his land, he owes them nothing and that it is his trust that they need to earn. Louis then goes on to reveal the mechanics and complexities of the hidden blade to Küpeyakwüskonam. Impressed, Küpeyakwüskonam compliments the two Assassins on their advanced technology.
Coming upon a small town in the countryside, the trio separate to search for leads on whether Chief Canaqueese passed through the area, or where he was headed. Louis suggests Küpeyakwüskonam head to a tavern alongside Ramona, meanwhile Louis himself will ask around town. Initially, Küpeyakwüskonam refuses to take directions from the older Assassin, however Ramona informs him that its the best place to gather information. Reluctantly, Küpeyakwüskonam agrees to go to the tavern with Ramona.
Returning not long after, Louis finds Ramona and Küpeyakwüskonam outside bickering once again. Forcing them to stop and heed what information Louis had come back with. Ramona reveals that Canaqueese was headed east, lining up with the information Louis found. The three then made their way east on horseback.
Death[]
As they travelled further east, they saw a smoke trail in the distance and quickly made their way toward it. They discovered that the raid on the village had already begun, compelled by his empathy Küpeyakwüskonam split away from the others and tried to help the villagers in need. Meanwhile, Ramona and Louis took down the French soldiers and locate Canaqueese amidst the chaos. However, the two encounter another Templar, a French commander by the name of Stéphane D’aureville. Noticing his Templar brand, Ramona and Louis give chase.
Ramona and Louis chase D'aureville into a burning lodgehouse. However, the Templar commander is able to escape when Louis saves Ramona from being crushed from a collapsing ceiling, pushing her out of the way and being trapped instead. Ramona tries to free him but to no avail, Louis tells her that she needs to go on and continue the mission before removing one of his hidden blades and giving it to Ramona, commanding her to gift it to Küpeyakwüskonam. Louis believes that she will need his help, that he will keep her alive. Emotionally, Ramona expresses her reluctance to leave and shows her devastation at her mentor's death. However, Louis forces her to leave before the lodgehouse collapses on both of them, reminding her to not let his death be in vain.
Personality and traits[]
Louis was a gentle yet dutiful man, holding a firm belief in the Assassin's goal of preserving freewill. Despite his noble status, his Assassin parents raised him to see everyone as his equals and taught him the Assassin mantra of "Nothing is true, everything is permitted" - while he never truly understood these words, they still stuck with him and helped formulate his worldview.
Because of his belief that every man was equal, Louis was a firm believer in second chances as shown in his meeting with Ramona Lucia, whom had initially stolen from him. Or his quick acceptance of Küpeyakwüskonam whom had threatened to kill him moments prior.
Trivia[]
- The name Louis is a French name, meaning "famed warrior". The surname Chaput is a variant of Chapu a nickname for a habitual wearer of a distinctive cloak or hat from a derivative of Old French chape 'hooded cloak cape hood' or 'hat' (from Late Latin capa).
