Samantha "Sam" Maguire (born 2000) is a member of the American Brotherhood of Assassins. Sam serves as a part of Gina Garcia's Assassin cell and provides technical and tactical support, as well as writes database entries for Jin Chen in his Animus sessions. She also helped construct the Animus HR-9.
In 2022, thanks to information received by the Templar Leah Chavez, Robbie and his cell learned of the existance of Jin Chen, a descendant of an Assassin of interest. They were then tasked with locating and retrieving Chen in order to explore his genetic memories and discover what it is Abstergo and another shadow group want with him.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Sam was born and raised in Queens, New York. Hailing from a lower income family, Sam was averse to the world's inequalities and nepotism disguised as meritocracy. Because of this, Sam was determined to earn her place in the world through hardwork, taking an interest in computers and coding in particular.
Graduating high school in 2018, Sam earned a scholarship and began attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology and majoring in computer science. During her time in college, she began hanging around with a unique crowd of individuals and developed an interest in conspiracy theories.
Sam's interest in conspiracy theories, coupled with her distaste of corporate capitalism led her down the path of "investigating" Abstergo Industries. Utilising her hacking skills, Sam was able to break her way into Abstergo's servers and database, discovering various secrets. Learning about both the Assassins and Templars, the Isu and the Pieces of Eden - she carefully leaked small pieces of Abstergo secrets to the darkweb, making sure to hide her tracks as she did so.
Despite this though, she was eventually tracked down by Abstergo and a team was sent to eliminate her. However, the Assassins also caught wind of her acts and discovered Abstergo planned to kill her. Sam was attacked in her dorm room by Abstergo but was rescued by the Assassins Hayley Yasutake and Horatio Pierce who eliminated the team sent to kill her and brought her to safety.
Immediately knowing who Yasutake and Pierce were and that her life as she knew it was over, now that she was a Templar target she asked to join the Assassins.
In May 2022, she attended the funeral of Arnold and Horatio Pierce to pay respects to the man that saved her life 4 years prior, deeply saddened by the Assassin's passing.
Search for Jin Chen[]
At an unknown point, Sam was assigned to an Assassin cell led by Gina Garcia comprising of Garcia's twin brother and now Sam herself. In 2022, the Assassins had been hounded by another secret organisation that had been going on for a year. William Miles tasked Sam and her cell with gathering more information on this group. During their investigation, the Assassins also learned that the Templars were also being attacked by this mysterious group.
In June Leah Chavez, a disillusioned Templar, leaked information to the Assassins that Abstergo had tracked down an Assassin descendant by the name of Jin Chen who's ancestor had a link to finding the answers they need. Sam was able to track Chen down to a police precinct in Philadelphia and the Assassins quickly made their way to him. Arriving at the precinct, they saw that Abstergo and the other group had already arrived.
Sam was the designated getaway driver once the field agents, Gina and Robbie successfully retrieved Chen. Upon doing so, she made her way to their hideout in Jersey City while the Garcias explained the situation to Chen and convinced him to work with them.
After arriving at the hideout, Sam is introduced to Jin and she quickly sets up her Animus ready for Jin to explore his ancestor's memories.
Arthur Kavanagh[]
Jin explores the genetic memories of his Irish Assassin ancestor which Sam and the others closely monitor his progress. During Jin's first animus session the group uncover the existence of the Preservers of Humanity. Following the conclusion of this first session, Sam witnesses Jin and Robbie enter an altercation which Gina is forced to stop - reminding them what they were her for and to act like adults or else.
The next day, Sam monitors Jin's next animus session. During this they learn of the Preservers goals to rid the world of the Assassins and Templars, as well as this they also discover the existence of the Armor of Ares.
Escape[]
Gina informs the group that their next priority is locating the Armor through Jin's genetic memories. However, before they can do this they are discovered by the Preservers who attacked Jin in Philadelphia.
Gina orders Sam and Jin to pack and get in the van as fast as they can while they deal with whoever's in the car. Gina and Robbie go on to meet the intruders. After packing Sam and Jin start up the van and wait for Gina and Robbie to return. Sam notifies Gina through her earpiece that they are ready to go. Gina eventually returns with an injured Robbie and zooms off to escape. As they enter the van, Gina searches for a tracker on Jin before throwing it out as Sam speedily drives off. As they flee, Gina begins patching up Robbie. Panicked, Sam reveals that the Preservers are following and are hot on their tail.
The Preservers begin open firing on the Assassins' van but Sam is driving in such an erratic and unpredictable way where the Preservers are having difficulty shooting their tires. Robbie curses himself for letting himself get shot by the Preservers. Jin offers to drive instead of Sam, having drove a frew getaway cars in his past. Agreeing, Sam hands over the wheel to Jin and Gina comes up with an idea on her own. She tells Sam to continue tending to Robbie while she gets in the passenger seat next to Jin. Pulling out a magnum from the dashboard, she tells Jin to do what he can to get them out of harm's way.
Gina and Jin are able to successfully escape from the Preservers. Jin celebrates their escape before being reminded by an annoyed Robbie that he's been shot. Still icy with Robbie, Jin tells him that he'll walk it off with Gina agreeing, revealing he will survive his injury. Sam adds on that he won't be able to return to the field for a while though because of his shoulder, wrapping it up in a sling. Robbie tries to argue with Sam but Gina uses her authority as the elder sister and leader, telling him the decision is final.
Search for the Armor of Ares[]
Following their escape, the Assassins travel to New York and hide out in a motel in Queens. After setting up in the motel, Gina announces her new plan, that they will continue the search for the Armor of Eden through Arthur's memories and also train Jin. Everyone is surprised at this but Gina reminds everyone that Robbie is currently benched due to his injury and having 2 field agents is better than one.
Following this, Jin re-enters the Animus in order to begin his search for the Armor of Ares. However, due to the nature of genetic memory, he is forced to relive the memories of Arthur's son Lonan Kavanagh. Remaining optimistic, Gina assures everyone that Lonan was with Arthur in Japan, and judging from the conversation that they witnessed between the two, it can be assumed that Lonan will continue Arthur's mission after the latters death in 1615. Following this, Jin continues searching through Lonan's memories.
During Jin's Animus session, Sam and the rest of the team witness Lonan being framed for the murder of his father and the Japanese Mentor through the feed. Gina conveys her shock at the way Arthur died, hoping he would have gone out in better circumstances. Robbie desires for Lonan to kill Ichiro and avenge his dad but Sam interjects that he has all the Assassins after him now, not liking where this story will go. On that note, it is now night time and Gina puts a pin on their Animus session for the day.
Being in the city of her birth, Sam takes the risk to sneak out and visit her family in Forest Hills. That night while Gina and Robbie are asleep, she leaves the hotel and makes her way to her childhood home - unbeknownst to her, she was tailed by Jin. She stops outside of her home for a few moments, wrestling with the choice to go further and speak to her family or not risk it. Sam eventually decides against it, not wanting to put her family at risk and returns to the motel.
The next day, following Gina and Jin's training session in the city, Jin returns to Lonan's memories. Following the conclusion of another portion of Lonan's memories, the group are shocked to find out that Lonan joined the Templar Order. Saddened that Lonan was so desperate that he had to turn to the Templars. However, Jin defends Lonan. Despite this though, he asks to be returned to Lonan's memories which Sam obliges.
Following the conclusion of Jin's Animus session that day. Sam decides to visit her parents' home again that night, merely to observe but not interact. However, Jin asks her where she is going, expressing his suspicion of her. Sam reassures him that her sneaking out isn't nefarious.
He challenges her to prove it, still not buying her story. Sighing, she ushers for him to go with her. As they make their way to Forest Hills, Sam tries to make small talk asking him how he's feeling about learning Lonan was a Templar. Jin remains firm in his sympathy for Lonan, mentioning that growing up he needed to do the same - not as extreme, but there were times where he had to seek sanctuary with criminals out of desperation. He also neglects to share that he also sees sense in the Templars' ideology, having experienced the worst humanity has to offer and also sharing responsibility in it, he wonders if the Templars are right.
Sam acknowledges his feelings, also agreeing with Lonan's reasoning but expressing disappointment he had no other options. Finally, Sam leads Jin to the house she had visited, revealing it was her childhood home and her parents still live there. Surprised, he asks why she hasn't gone to see them but Sam reminds him that she is an Assassin and Abstergo could hurt them. Jin irritatedly asks her why she would give up a normal life for the Assassins but Sam reveals that she didn't, she joined them in desperation like Lonan did.
This is where Sam tells Jin of how she was found by Abstergo for leaking information and found by the Assassins, rescued from certain death. Upon hearing this, Jin apologises of being suspicious of her. He tells her of his mother's suicide, sharing that he didn't actually believe it to be the case, and explains that he was initially angry at Sam for believing she chose the Assassins over her family, upset that he no longer had one. Sam accepts his apology and expresses her own condolences for his mother. Thanking her, he then suggests they return to the motel. The next day, he continues searching through Lonan's memories.
The next day, the Assassins discover that Lonan retrieved the Sword and Shield from Ares' armor during his time in Japan, handing it over to the Templars. During this time, Robbie heads out into the city to gather more supplies. Meanwhile, Jin is suddenly forced into the perspective of another ancestor by 1620, Lonan's illegitimate son. Jin is angered by this set back but Gina assures Jin that they are still making progress, and are way more ahead than Abstergo and the Preservers seeing as they don't have access to Jin's DNA.
Jin asks where Robbie is Sam tells him that Robbie left to get supplies a few hours prior with Gina adding that he should be back by now. However, a few more hours go by and it is now nightfall, there is still no sign of Robbie and everyone is beginning to grow concerned. Sam then sees that she has received a message from Zhao Baozhai a high ranking member of Abstergo Industries, that Robbie has been taken by Abstergo agents and is currently en route to an Abstergo Foundation facility located in China. Zhao states that in order for them to return Robbie to safety, Jin would need to willingly surrender himself to Abstergo so they can study the memories of the Kavanagh family.
Rescuing Robbie[]
Following Zhao's call, Gina makes a call to William Miles and shares the contents of the video message with him. Miles acknowledges what he has been told and arranges for funds to be transferred to them so that they may board a flight to Beijing. The group then begin hastily packing, Sam and Jin can see Gina is worried but she is making an effort to appear calm. Sam's guilt gets the better of her and she confesses that Robbie's capture must have been her fault, explaining that she spent the last few nights sneaking out to observe her family in Forest Hills. This is where Gina snaps, getting in Sam's face she curses her out and calls her irresponsible and stupid, threatening to never forgive her if anything happens to Robbie.
Jin steps in between them and urges for the two to stop, admitting that what Sam did was stupid and that he should have said something sooner. Gina then turns her fury on to him, raging at him for letting Sam do what she did. However, Jin cuts her off and tells her there is no time to point fingers and the main priority right now is figuring out a plan to save Robbie.
Gina relents, calming down and agrees. She apologises to Sam, lamenting that he is the only family she has left. Jin sympathises and assures her that they will get him back. That same day, Sam and the others board a flight to Beijing. The group begin formulating plans to rescue Robbie but none of them are sustainable, this is when Jin ultimately decides that Robbie's best chance at release is if he actually gives himself up.
Sam and Gina argue against this but Jin states they have no other choice, that they will use the time they have to continue training Jin so that he is able to escape Abstergo once the trade has been complete. Wary of this plan of action, Gina reluctantly accepts much to the dismay of Sam but Jin states that Robbie's kidnapping is partly his fault and this is his chance to rectify it. Gina thanks Jin for doing this for her brother, hugging him.
Arriving in China 13 hours later, the Assassins rent a motel and remain there as they prepare to make the trade. However, an anxious Jin requests to enter the Animus and search into the memories of Lonan's son, to see if he can aid the Assassins a little more in locating the Armor of Ares before being forced to do so by Abstergo. Gina grants Jin this request and asks Sam to set up an Animus session.
The next day, following Jin's Animus session Sam and the others begin preparations to have Jin give himself up. They then leave their hotel and make their way over to the Abstergo Foundation facility located in Beijing. Jin decides to go in alone, unsure if the Templars will hold up their end of the bargain and wanting Gina and Sam to have a chance to escape. A short amount of time later, Robbie is released and they quickly leave the area with him, relieved he is safe and unharmed. However, lamentful over Jin.
Breaking out Jin[]
The three spend their time devising a plan to break Jin out but to no avail. Robbie apologises to the team for getting caught and putting them all in this situation, however Sam puts the blame on herself. Gina tells them that what's done is done and that they need to accept it and move on, that rescuing Jin is their highest priority.
Eventually, Sam and her fellow Assassins seek the aid of the Chinese Brotherhood who, after hearing their story, agree to help Gina's cell. They spend the next few days planning a guerilla-like assault on Abstergo, in order to break out Jin amongst the chaos and return him to safety. Following the finalisation of this plan, Gina orders Samantha and Robbie to remain behind so Sam can provide tactical support and Robbie is out of danger due to his injured shoulder.
However, a few hours later Robbie grows restless and despite Sam's protests - he leaves to involve himself on the assault. Knowing she is unable to convince him, Sam provides tactical support for Robbie while he is out in the field.
Confrontation in Japan[]
A few hours later, Gina and Robbie return with Jin. Relieved to see him, she greets him with a firm embrace before he relays what transpired at Abstergo. After learning what Jin had to say, the Mentor acknowledges this notifying Sam and the others that he will contact the Assassins in Japan and arrange for them to be transported to Japan as soon as possible. Some hours later, Sam, Gina, Jin, and Robbie are on a military plane en route to Japan. The pilot informs the Assassins over the speaker that a team led by Kiyoshi Takakura had successfully retrieved Ares' Sword from Kyoto with some casualties. As well as this, the team sent to recover the Shield in Tokyo have gone dark.
Robbie expresses that this is good news. Jin is noticeably quiet which the others notice, they ask him what's up and he states that he believes this is all his fault. Sam asks how and Jin confesses that he willingly handed himself over to the Templars because he believed they could quickly put an end to the suffering in the world. Gina, as well as the others, are shocked by this, but Jin continues and states that he eventually saw that their ways were wrong and tried to rectify it by sending the Assassins the footage of Hayato's memories. He then grows visibly angry at the thought of Min, mentioning that she preyed on his desperation and tricked him into retrieving the memories so she could keep the Preservers updated - and now good Assassins are dying because of his mistake. Gina reminds him that right now he is accompanying to make up for his mistake, and that should mean something to him.
Robbie adds that, while Min hoodwinked him, his actions came from a place of good and now they were going to stop both groups from acquiring the Armor. Sam adds in that she's sorry about what happened to his mother. However, Jin states that he is happy that he has some sort of closure and that she didn't willingly leave him. He can make peace with that.
The Assassins arrive in Japan some time later before heading over to the location of where Kakureta and the Hashimoto estate was formerly located. They arrive there to find Baozhai, Jin's half-sister, leading a team that is already searching the area, Gina orders Robbie and Sam to keep watch while she and Jin eliminate the Abstergo members. She promptly hands him a smoke bomb, the two throw it into the area and rush toward the agents engulfed in smoke. They assassinate a large amount of Abstergo agents before the smoke dissipates. With a small number left, Gina and Jin then kill the remaining agents.
Sam and Robbie, while emerged in a hiding spot, watch Jin and Baozhai's confrontation leading up to her being shot by Maria and the other Preservers. Following this, Jin calls for Sam's aid in the hopes of getting her to stop Baozhai's bleeding. Meanwhile, Jin and Gina engage Maria and another Preserver while Robbie apprehends Huang Min. Sam is unable to save Baozhai and she passes away during the skirmish and she expresses her condolences to Jin.
Following this, Gina receives confirmation that the Assassin cell recovering the Shield in Tokyo were wiped out but one managed to escape with the Shield. Happy to hear this news, Sam and the others dig up the Chestplate from where Hayato had left it four decades prior. They then call to rendezvouz with the other Assassins at a specific location, taking Min with them in order to interrogate her once she awakened. As they made their way out of Kakureta, Jin expresses his desire to hunt down and eliminate the Preservers.
